Drunk Driving
Americans citizens take about 233 billion trips in automobiles each year. One out of 2,000 trips are taken by those driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI/DWI). Almost one out of three traffic deaths involve drunk drivers, so a tiny amount of bad behavior is one of the major causes of deaths on the roadways.
Every 53 minutes someone is killed in a drunk driving accident. 9,878 in total in 2011. Every 90 seconds a person is injured because of this very preventable crime.
About 1/3 of the drunk driving problem, arrests, crashes, deaths, and injuries, comes from the repeat offenders. At any given point we share the roads with 2 million people with three or more drunk driving offenses. Taking away their licenses isn’t enough because 50-75% of them drive anyway. This is why we need to require ignition interlocks for all of the drunk driving offenders We can stop the offenders before they repeat their crimes.
2/3 of the drunk driving problem comes from people who, before they kill or injure themselves or others, have not yet been arrested. That’s why we need to support law enforcement that will help deter the drunk drivers through proven solutions such as sobriety checkpoints. It’s also why we should strongly support research into technologies that will help to eliminate drunk driving.
We need everyone's help to eliminate this threat. Join us in the battle against drunk driving.
